It had been announced a fortnight ago that the filly would not race again. and she was in intensive care.

Her regular jockey James Doyle described the four-year-old as “one in a million”.

Trainer William Haggas said Sea Of Class “took a turn for the worse” in the early hours of Monday.

“She was a marvellous filly and obviously she had a huge amount of ability,” said the Newmarket trainer.

“She was very intelligent and very clever. She fought very hard, but today has been a sad day.”

Sea Of Class, a daughter of the 2009 Derby and Arc winner Sea The Stars, was just beaten as Enable won the Arc for the second year running in October.

Equine colic is a life-threatening disorder of the digestive system.

“It did actually hit me quite hard. She was one in a million – one of those horses you dream about riding,” Doyle told Sky Sports Racing.

“From speaking to the people who look after her, she had e had a beautiful character, a very kind filly and everyone just adored her/”
